A freelance editor community to help you thrive

Join a supportive group of women and people of underrecognized gender identities and make friends while building a business you love.

“I did it all on my own,”

said no thriving freelance editor ever.

It’s common to feel isolated or lonely, unsure of how to get clients or make connections, excluded from the sometimes secretive world of editing, and like you’re struggling to get your business off the ground or to expand to the next level.

That’s exactly why I created the Freelance Editors Club in 2020—because it takes a village of support to navigate building your own business.

You deserve to feel seen, respected, included, and successful as a freelance business owner. Having a consistent support system will give you the knowledge, resources, courage, and confidence to achieve the business of your dreams.

Because let’s face it, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to freelance editing.

Our community is a fun and diverse group of editors at a variety of experience levels seeking collaborative support in a come-as-you-are kind of space. There’s no judgment for having kids in the background, no gatekeeping around pricing, and no cishet men preaching marketing-bro bullshit.

Working with Tara was an invaluable experience for me. She met me right where I was in the early stage of establishing my freelance editing business. Tara allowed me to set the pace of things and offered pertinent information, helpful resources, and sincere encouragement all along the way.

Tara gave me the gift of being seen and affirmed. For a brand new copy editor and proofreader, this helped me to believe that I have what it takes to be successful in this field. Because of Tara’s support I have a strong foundation for my business and I have the resources and community (Freelance Editors Club) I need to continue to learn and grow.

Workshop: Rest Is Not a Reward: Creating Personalized Self-Care Plans for Editors

During this hands-on workshop, we’ll talk about how editors can come up with their own self-care plan, no matter how much is going on in their lives. This conversation will go beyond bubble baths and bonbons and dig into what is best for each editor.

(I’ll also be giving this presentation for ACES on July 16.)

Book club: We’re going to be reading Blurb Your Enthusiasm: A Cracking Compendium of Book Blurbs, Writing Tips, Literary Folklore and Publishing Secrets by Louise Willder.

Q&A chat: We’re going to have an open discussion on self-care and what that looks like for each of us.

What’s coming up in FEC

Please note: times for events in Calendar are listed in Central time, and will not show in your local time zone.

Meet your community facilitator

I’m Tara (she/her), freelance editor since 2012; Murder, She Wrote superfan; and FEC founder and host. I started the Freelance Editors Club in 2020 because I felt lonely in my journey as a freelance editor. Turns out, I wasn’t the only one.

I’ve intentionally built the FEC to be a first-of-its-kind resource for women and nonbinary editors to get support in all the ways I wish I’d had access to when I first started: colleagues to talk to, a mentor to lean on, trainings to grow my skill set, and accountability to get shit done.

Now, for your questions…

When you’re in the space she provides, you truly feel the nonjudgmental, compassionate space where you can freely be who you are. We can safely talk about grievances with clients and ask about how to continue to thrive in our businesses. She will never tell us not to do something or say ‘This is how it’s done.’ We’re all different, and she’s all about celebrating the uniqueness of every person that comes to the table.
